Wednesday 19th September – walks **** St. Valery en Caux & Veules les Roses

Had nearly 10 hours sleep! After breakfast we travelled down the coast. Had a walk and visited the tourist information at St. Valery en Caux, a very nice port/marina. Tourist information gave us a circular walk leaflet for the village of Veules les Roses. We went back about 5 miles to the village, parked at one of the access points for the walk and had lunch. We set off and really enjoyed it, the whole thing follows the river Veules which is only just under 2000m long from its source near the car park through amazing water cress planted in the shallows of the river and being harvested as we walked past:) to where it reaches the beach. The village is full of really beautiful cottages; some of the thatched ones have iris plants and ferns planted into a clay weather strip along the top of the thatch so the roots help to anchor it to the roof. The walk goes through the centre of town, along the prom, crossing the river where it goes out onto the beach, then back along the other bank of the river passing many mills and also across a bridge where we saw brown trout swimming. An excellent afternoon :) We drove on, stopping at St. Martin aux Buneaux where the beach is accessed by a footpath which comes to an abrupt halt at the cliff top but a metal step ladder takes you vertically down to the beach!!! I went down but Mag daren’t it was so steep. There were lots of shell fishermen going down with wicker baskets on their back for their catch. Carried on and had a cuppa at Les Petit Dalles where several windsurfers were struggling out to the waves – I have never seen so much wave kit, a whole coven of Witchcraft boards :) – wave sailings not for me sailing underpowered on a small board and sail waiting for a wave!!! . Monet and other artists have painted here and there were several art students sketching in their books. We finally stopped for the night at Eletot at a picnic site just back from the cliff top and near a church and cows. Thick wet white could by the time we got here but weather not bad for the rest of the day.
